From La Chapelle d'Abondance, simply leave the alpine pastures and descend into the valley to reach the shores of Lake Geneva. In less than an hour, the scenery transforms completely: the mountain peaks give way to lakeside walks, flower-filled villages, marinas, and sweeping views of the Alps. Whether on the French or Swiss side, this getaway offers a delightful escape amidst the lake, heritage, and art of living.
OPTION 1: The gentleness of the French shore
First stop in Évian-les-Bains

After leaving the Abondance Valley, head to the shores of Lake Geneva at Évian-les-Bains . Renowned worldwide for its mineral water, the town charms visitors with its elegant promenade, flower gardens, and Belle Époque atmosphere.
Stroll along the lake, admire the historic facades of the city center, and take a break at the Cachat spring, where Évian water has flowed freely for over two centuries. Architecture enthusiasts will also appreciate the Palais Lumière, a former spa now a cultural center.
Heading to Yvoire, one of the most beautiful villages in France

About thirty minutes from Évian, Yvoire looks like it's straight out of a postcard. Founded in the Middle Ages on the shores of Lake Geneva, this fortified village is now listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Its cobbled streets, flower-filled houses, and small harbor offer an ideal setting for a romantic or family stroll. Take the time to wander through the narrow lanes before heading to the quays to admire the view of the Swiss mountains.
A gourmet break by the water
Lake Geneva is also a gastronomic destination. It's the perfect opportunity to discover the famous perch fillets, fera (a type of whitefish), or Arctic char caught in the lake. Several restaurants overlooking the water allow you to savor these local specialties while enjoying exceptional views. We especially love the terrace at Le Jolla !
OPTION 2: Heading towards Switzerland, between Vevey and Montreux
Vevey, between art of living and the gentleness of Lake Geneva

From La Chapelle d'Abondance, simply cross the border to reach Vevey. Nestled between lake and vineyards, this charming Swiss town captivates with its elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. Stroll along the palm-lined quays, discover the famous Charlie Chaplin statue, and enjoy the many terraces that enliven the lakefront. Culture enthusiasts can also visit the food museum housed in the former Nestlé headquarters.
The Swiss Riviera as far as Montreux
A few kilometers further on, the road runs alongside one of the most beautiful stretches of Lake Geneva. Between Mediterranean gardens, palm trees and mountains plunging into the lake, the landscape is sometimes reminiscent of the Italian Rivieras.
Montreux is a must-see destination. Known for its famous jazz festival, the town offers a magnificent promenade stretching for several kilometers along the waterfront. Sculptures, flowerbeds, and views of the Alps create a unique atmosphere.

Chillon Castle, a jewel of Lake Geneva
It's impossible to leave Montreux without discovering Chillon Castle. Perched on a rocky islet on the shores of the lake, this medieval monument is one of the most visited sites in Switzerland. Its historic halls, courtyards, and dungeons tell the story of nearly a thousand years of history.

Our advice
To fully enjoy this getaway, plan a full day. From La Chapelle d'Abondance, Lake Geneva is easily accessible by car, with two great options depending on your preferences: the French shore for a gentle and authentic atmosphere between Évian and Yvoire, or the Swiss shore for a more panoramic day between Vevey, Montreux and Chillon Castle.
And to see the lake differently, consider boat trips: they allow you to connect some shores while enjoying a superb view of the Alps.
